Jean: Marching to His Own Tempo, Melody and Rhythm
Ladies and Gentlemen, please allow me in to introduce you to Jean Carlos Rodríguez López-Cepero, otherwise simply known as Jean. This Puerto Rico born, Orlando, Florida bred singer/writer/producer was built to be a musician. Not only do his talents attest to that, but his upbringing with a family centered on music molded him for the ever-changing, fast-paced industry. “I have a close nit family, so I want to one day be able to support myself and my family with my music,” Jean muses. So when Jean says music is his life, he’s telling the truth.
Jean is what you call a true musician, in that his interests and talents lie way beyond mere vocals. “Music is not the easiest business to be a part of, so you really do have to love it to overcome and be successful at it,” Jean admits of the music being his destiny.
“My ultimate goal is to be able to do this and nothing else for the rest of my life. I hope to one day be a pioneer of the fusion of R&B and Soul. There is nothing like what I’m doing musically, with the production and vocal arrangement. It’s a cross between two worlds—Latin and Anglo and I’m meeting in the middle,” Jean proudly admits.
“My music consists of a mix from R&B and Soul, to Pop and Funk with an alternative twist,” Jean describes of his unique sound that incorporates all the places he’s lived. Jean and his family moved from Puerto Rico to Orlando, Florida when he was nine years old, facilitating his interest in R&B and set the stage for what his music is today. Jean later chased his dream 3,000 miles away to L.A., where he grabbed a hold of L.A.’s rock infused sound. Later, he made another potent move to New York, where he experienced the melting pot of music. “There are lots of people that really go beyond and out of the box up there. And in Miami, I’ve learned a lot about Latin rhythms and writing [lyrically]. It wasn’t until I moved to New York that I found myself, musically,” Jean reveals.
With the anticipated release of his sophomore album, Out The Box, Jean feels as though he has been able to be more of himself. The album will be out later this year and “is definitely more Alternative than the first one, with more grunge, edge and dirt. It’s got more soul than pop,” Jean reveals of his pride and joy. We can expect his lyrics to go deeper than before, with and more personal topics; but not to worry; we will be able to dance to upbeat rhythms as well.
