“I have to warn you! I don’t want you coming to me nine months later, talking about, ‘Donell, look what you’ve done to me!’” R&B pro Donell Jones breaks out into laughter so hearty, it can only come from someone who’s completely satisfied and confident in themselves and the product they’re pushing. So it seems this soulful singer is promising us that his new album, Lyrics just might be a natural aphrodisiac.
It’s been a while since we’ve heard some sexy, yet soulful sounds that makes us clutch our proverbial peals. Remember how Marvin crooned about his sexual obsession, but you never felt dirty when listening. Al used to bleed his heart all over the wax and beg for someone—anyone—to help him mend his broken heart. Back in the day, the lyrics to our favorite songs grabs us by the eardrums and forces us to pay attention. There was no R&B, only Soul. There couldn’t have been a moniker more fitting, considering the depths that artists had to reach within themselves to give each song the emotion it deserved.
Soul has slowly morphed into R&B. “I think it’s lost its feeling and emotion. R&B artists these days can sing, but where’s the emotion in it? Where’s the passion? It’s almost like those guys back then had a lot of flavor,” Donell admits. Drawing inspiration from legends of music’s yesteryear, Donell is set to release his fifth studio album, Lyrics, on September 28th. This album is a testament of its very title. “Every song has a message in it. Every song is going to take you on a journey. It’s almost like you can close your eyes and see the video without even seeing it,” Donell proudly admits of his unique ability of being able to paint a picture the way a lyricist does.
“Once people get this album, it’s going to be a breath of fresh air”
