I was invited to Chaka Khan’s 60th birthday party and could hardly believe it was my life. I’ve grown up, like many little Black girls, singing, “I’m Every Woman” at the top of my lungs. But I knew Whitney’s version first and I couldn’t wawit until the end of the song to shout, “Chaka Khan!”

Now, some 15 plus years later, I find myself at an intimate setting with her, celebrating 60 years of her life. I pinch myself all the time.
What do you wear to a legend’s birthday? I didn’t want to overdo it, so I kept it simple. Plus, I was going right after work. I didn’t want to be doing the most. I wore my little black dress from Forever 21+ that I got for $24.80. The peplum is very flattering and the sheer at the shoulders gives it some sass.

nd then a full circle moment happened. As I danced to Chaka’s “I’m Every Woman” with Charreah from Essence, Pauletta Washington comes up and starts dancing with us! Seriously one of the most surreal moments of my life.
Such an amazing night! It’s times like these I can’t help but be thankful for what I have and what I do. I’ve always known I’d make something of myself, but to see it actually happening. If I ever complain, feel free to slap me.
