I recently went to New Orleans for the 20th Anniversary of the Essence Music Festival and of course it was important to me because Prince was headlining and this would be my first time seeing him! Often at these large events, where Black women run wild, there’s a ton of websites and photographers looking for the best in street style–from hair, to makeup to outfits, there’s enough photo snaps to last a lifetime within the span of a weekend.
I was pleasantly surprised when Essence magazine stopped me and asked if they could snap a photo of my hair. Of course I said yes. Essence’s resident photographer, Hannan Saleh is the best. She snapped the gorgeous photo above.
And my blonde and brown curls? My girl Exstacia Charles of Extazi Natural Hair Care hooked me up. It’s a protective style, so my natural hair is safe underneath. It’s called the Interlock Method. Your natural hair is cornrowed underneath and the loose curls are pulled through the cornrow.
What I love most about this look is the versatility. You can part it however you like and a bit of weave mousse and you’re good to go. I’ve been working out with this hair and it’s no fuss, no muss. The worst part is that I can’t wash it, as the curls are synthetic. But the style usually lasts 4-6 weeks.
I love my hair and so does Essence! Yay for beautiful, natural protective styling!
